Toddler beds use a shorter mattress (typically around 70 x 140–160cm) and sit lower to the ground, often with integrated guard rails — designed for the transition out of a cot, roughly ages 2–4.
A UK Single bed uses a full 90 x 190cm mattress, the same size an adult would sleep in. Most children move to a single bed somewhere between ages 4 and 6, though this is far more about height and how settled they are sleeping through the night than a fixed age.
A few signals matter more than age on its own:
For kids beds generally, check for rounded corners and edges, a headboard height that doesn't create a climbing/trapping hazard, and — for any frame with storage underneath — that drawers close flush and don't leave sharp runners exposed.
For bunk-style or raised frames aimed at older children, always check the manufacturer's minimum recommended age, usually 6 years and up, in line with UK safety guidance for elevated sleeping surfaces.
Should I buy a single bed early to avoid buying twice?
It's a reasonable trade-off — a single bed a child grows into is usually more cost-effective than a toddler bed you'll replace within a year or two, as long as they're already out of guard-rail territory at night.
